With BIC Platform, Knorr-Bremse releases the brakes on process management

Knorr Bremse

With process governance in BIC Platform, Knorr-Bremse ensures seamless versioning of its processes, audit-proof execution and storage of information, and automation of numerous activities previously performed manually by process owners.

Intuitive, innovative & powerful

More than 10 years ago, Knorr-Bremse introduced the ARIS® BPM Platform, which is a technical BPM solution for process modeling. This is precisely where the difficulties lay. "The product was simply too powerful for our requirements. Our BPM managers are not professional modelers, but rather casual modelers. With the BIC Platform, we have introduced an innovative, powerful and, above all, intuitive BPM software and, with GBTEC AG, we have gained a competent, customer-oriented and practice-oriented service provider."

Project highlights

BIC Platform is flexible for customer adaptations. This enabled Knorr-Bremse to integrate its existing processes into the software's intuitive interface with little effort and to adopt method adaptations.

The challenge

Merging of different process documentations

Striving for best-in-class processes forms the basis for Knorr-Bremse's competitiveness. The company thus works continuously to optimize quality, processes and structures. In recent years, Knorr-Bremse has modeled several thousand business processes - spread across several databases in ARIS®. These processes have also been mapped in various modeling notations. Knorr-Bremse's requirement was to seamlessly transfer all processes documented in ARIS® to BIC Platform via the import function - both methodically and graphically. In addition to the large number of process models, it was also necessary to take into account that Knorr-Bremse worked with a highly customized modeling method and that the processes were modeled in up to 12 languages. Due to GBTEC's extensive experience with ARIS® migrations, the migration could be implemented in the shortest possible time without any data loss after the method mapping and corresponding test migration had been carried out.

The solution

A central database that meets any requirement

What was needed was BPM software that could be used without lengthy training. The modeling module BIC Process Design offers numerous functions to increase the quality of modeling and to minimize the time invested in modeling. Other requirements included an attractive and intuitive process portal to communicate the process information throughout the company and a full text-based search that allows filtering of results by different dimensions. In addition, it was necessary to have the processes checked and approved with workflow support and thus to formalize the necessary process governance processes. The modular BIC Platform met all these requirements to Knorr-Bremse's complete satisfaction.

The benefit

BIC as a single point of truth with intuitive operation and attractive design

The process portal, which was adapted to Knorr-Bremse's corporate identity, was primarily designed to enable intuitive and self-explanatory retrieval of process-relevant information. This was achieved by means of an innovative 3-click system, division-, department- and site-specific filtering, and the role-based presentation of processes, documents and applications. The review and approval of processes is now supported in a rule-based manner by means of governance workflows. These are seamlessly integrated into the process portal and ensure the versioning of processes, the audit-proof execution and storage of information, and relieve process owners of numerous activities that were previously performed manually. In addition, Knorr-Bremse benefits from:

  • a reduction in the complexity of process modeling
  • a formalization of the processes by means of governance workflows
