Over 10 years ago, Knorr-Bremse has implemented the BPM platform ARIS© – very powerful BPM solution for process modelling. This was the difficulty according to Arnulf Rausch, BPM Manager at Knorr-Bremse. “The product was simply too powerful for our needs. Our BPM leaders are not professional modellers but rather casual modellers.”
Intuitive operation and attractive design
And with only occasional use of the software, the motivation to model processes with ARIS© was too low because of its complexity and power. The acceptance for process modeling declined rapidly. Therefore a BPM software which can be used without extensive training was necessary. The modeling module BIC Design offers numerous features to enhance the quality and to minimize the time of modeling. Other requirements included an attractive and intuitive process portal to communicate process information within the company as well as a full text search, which allows to filter the results according to different dimensions. It was also important to check and release workflow-based processes and thus to formalize the necessary process governance. The modular designed BIC Platform covered all of these requirements to the fullest satisfaction of Knorr-Bremse.
Quality and processes
The pursuit of best-in-class processes forms the basis for the competitiveness of Knorr-Bremse. Thus, the company is constantly working on optimizing quality, processes and structures. With the worldwide consistently implemented management system Knorr Excellence (KE), Knorr-Bremse combines for many years initiatives for the continuous improvement of business processes. In this context, Knorr-Bremse has cross-functionally combined all initiatives for process op-timization and has also merged all its management systems into one unified process model. Knorr Excellence provides a common platform within the group that facilitates the access to business processes and improves the communication. As part of the KE management system the focus was laid on the harmonization and standardization of internal processes.
Data migration at the touch of a button
Over the past few years Knorr-Bremse has modeled several thousand business processes – allocated across multiple data-bases in ARIS©. These processes were also displayed in different modeling notations. The requirement of Knorr-Bremse was to import all processes seamlessly with the BIC import function that have been documented in ARIS©. In addition to the large number of process models, it was also important to consider that Knorr-Bremse has already worked with a highly customized modeling method and the processes have been modeled in up to 12 languages. Due to GBTEC’s great experience with ARIS© migrations, the migration could be implemented quickly without any data loss after a performed method-mapping and an appropriate test migration.
The process portal as a central access point
The process portal which was customized to the Knorr-Bremse Corporate Identity foresaw especially the intuitive and self-explanatory finding of process-relevant information. This was implemented through an innovative 3-click systematic, a division-, department- and location-specific filtering as well as a role-based display of processes, documents and applications. The review and release of the processes is now rule-based supported by BIC Governance. BIC Governance is seamlessly integrated in the process portal and provides versioning of processes, audit-proofed implementation and storage of information. It also takes over activities which previously have been performed manually by the process owner.
